About Amador County...

DID YOU GROW UP IN VOLCANO? Volcano Press is compiling a history of the town, and would like to receive the thoughts and memories of young people who grew up in the town, and their views of its significance in their lives.

AMADOR COUNTY CEMETARY BOARD: “WHO AM I” PROJECT – The Amador County Cemetery Board is beginning a 2-year project on "Who Was I?"  We want to identify as many of the unmarked graves in our pioneer cemeteries as we can, and are hoping the residents of Amador County will help us out by letting us know if they can identify any of the many graves which have no markers. Records of pioneer cemeteries were not kept.  In most cases all that's available is information after 1920--except for inscriptions on older tombstones.  We have transcribed the legible tombstones in most of the pioneer cemeteries (still have a couple to go) and now wish to find out about those for whom we have no identification.
We can send pictures of illegible mortuary markers, unmarked curbing surrounding unidentified graves.  We are hoping residents will call one of us to go with them to identify final resting places and then the ACCB will install a permanent headstone.

CHILDREN OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: Be a part of history in Amador County as a new organization is forming: The Hiram C. Meek Society, National Society of the Children of the American Revolution.
The National Society of the Children of the American Revolution, founded in 1895, is the oldest patriotic organization for youths in our country. Membership is open to descendents of patriots of the American Revolution, ages birth to twenty-one. Members gain invaluable leadership experience in conducting meetings, following parliamentary procedures and standard protocol, serving as delegates and speaking before groups at local, state and national conferences.
Future meetings and activities will be planned for all ages with special consideration given to younger members.  For more information, call Laura at 209-304-5255.

VOLUNTEER AT THE KENNEDY MINE! Nothing can compare to the look in a youngster’s eyes when he, or she, sees the first signs of color in the gold pan at the Kennedy Mine. Almost as gratifying is the look on the face of the volunteer who is helping that youngster. The Kennedy now can use the services of a limited number of additional volunteers, maybe 100 or so, like we once had.
We see so many seniors walking along our roads because their doctor said, “you must get some exercise”.  Why not get your exercise in a fun way? We probably could extend your life by many years. At least, we can make it a lot more interesting.
We have jobs of all kinds for those of any age. We have volunteers in their 80’s and 90’s. We have volunteers in High School. Ours is a close-knit group of men and women who just feel good about doing something worth while.
